Don't feel rushed to respond. I know the holidays make it hard. But...

Since I'm Whiney, I'll start with one thing I think was unrealistic.

How easily Cordelia sort of defected. Even though it was a short one, they were in effect at war. And I know the war was officially over.

But I would compare this to a US citizen becoming a Japanese citizen 6 months after the fall of Japan in WW2. I say Japan because the people of Cordilias world really thought of the other side as barbarians with a very different culture.

And just like after WW2, if someone, even if they really loved a Japanese citizen and that person even had the same values..... I just think it would be very hard to move to Japan and abandon your own country.

Think of yourself, as much as you might love someone, could you move to North Korea. You're ok with the person, but the country. I would think you would be terrified of moving.

The book is great and she is a good author. I'm halfway through the next book. So far this is the only thing I find hard to believe.

I decided to read the book in-store :) and I don't think I'll be picking up any more in the future. It just felt so ... patchwork-y, put together without a connecting thread. I think I've been spoiled some by reading Patricia Briggs, Illona Andrews, Jim Butcher, and Ann Aguirre because they all have amazing plot lines that are just woven together masterfully. I finished Divine Misdemeanors and wasn't sure what the whole point of it was. I know she progressed *some* of the overall plot along, like putting more magic in the hands of the humans (still think that astral projection in the Middle East was very silly), and showing that Merry's still trying to consolidate power with her guards - and their lack of trust in her. But those are just small side plots. Where's the big bang? Mhairi, I completely agree that it felt like LKH said, "I've ignored the mystery plot for 2/3 of the book, so I'd better wrap it up quickly in the last few pages." And with such a whimper, too. Eh ... I'm so sad about this. She really used to be my absolute favorite author and now I can barely stand her. Sigh.

I'm on my way to my fiance's house tomorrow morning, so I'll bring Shards of Honor along. Honestly, I probably will only be able to talk about it after the 1st, though. I'm doing some running/driving around after Christmas. But you guys go ahead and start and I can jump in :) Great idea!!

Let me say right off I went from reading Moning to Hamilton bad move because Mac's story was awesome. After a day or so I picked Merry back up. I am with Dianne some of her dialog got on nerves to long to describe certain things. My opinion and I maybe shot for this is I felt toward the end of the book she was like crap gotta finish the murder part of the story. I did enjoy seeing how her court seems to becoming together. Reese has not always been a favorite, I've always liked him but he kind of went to the back burner for me in the last several books. I have to say thou I really enjoyed his part in the story. I was kind up in the air with this book if I would continue with this series. But I've decided to stick it out. It was an enjoyable read like visiting old friends you haven't seen in awhile. I didn't realize how much I've missed them til this book. So yep I'll be sticking around.

Lord master is actually character that was introduced in Adam's book... I LOVED this book. Boy Karen sure knows how to leave you hanging doesn't she? I keep going back and forth on the identity of the beast.... There are so many questions heres a hint don't go from reading Mac to reading Merry Gentry. I kept getting myself sooooo confused I had to put Merry's book down for a day.
I am with you booklover there are so many questions I hope the next book is longer so they are all answered. ;D

Thanks. Momma had not recognized anyone in over a year and me in almost 2 years. Until a week ago this past Friday she had been doing good medically in that she didn't have any other health issues (high BP, diabeties etc). We had taken her off all meds except the ones to keep her comfortable (pain, sinus etc) because we didn't feel like we should try to keep her body going if her mind wasn't there and she did really good for 6 months. So the speed at which she went down hill took us by surprise. A week ago this past Friday her BP shot up and then it was down hill rapidly from there.

I suggest that you may want to pass on this book. I like seeing the court that is outside of Faery being yanked into the 21 century.

I still have my problems with the over use of certain words and repetitive over long dialog when having sex and the parallels between the 2 series, but this was still a good read. I liked the move back to the beginning of the series.

Yes Dianne, I have read the last two books. It's not that the Goddess is passing on powers outside of Faery that leaves me questioning it, it's the method through which she does so that sounds fishy. A lot of authors try to pull in current events in their plots to make it sounds sexy. Just the idea that she heals troops in the Middle East with magical astral projection ... well, it sounds artificial. Like it didn't flow with the plot very well. Why not heal someone/show the black coach locally? It just seems artificial, like "this would be a good plot" and "I can make myself look good" by putting in a scene where I/Merry help soldiers.

I may or may not read this one, but not because the action takes place outside of Faery. I've read several reviews that critique it in ways that I wouldn't care for, either.

After Christmas sounds good. But I will be out for a bit in January. I've got surgery on the fourteenth and will be in the hospital for about a week. It may take a bit to get back online or it might be really quick.

...

Hmm. Chronologically, I think it's Falling Free, which is a prequel. I think it's best read as filling in historic detail, rather than the beginning of the series.

Publication order is either Shards of Honor or The Warrior's Apprentice. There's an advantage to reading either of those first. Shards is chronologically before Apprentice, but Apprentice is a complete tale with Miles not knowing certain things and the reader learns those secrets in Shards. Sharing Miles experience, then uncovering the truth of the past, Bothari, and so much more is great.

They are technically also the beginning of the Vorkosigan saga, so I'd recommend starting with one of them no matter what.

Shards of Honor is probably the best bet, since it's the real beginning no matter how you look at it.

The second book in the Daphne Martin Cake Decorating Mysteries puts Daphne into the uncomfortable situation of investigating the death of an acquaintance. She’d been at the hospital visiting when Fred passed away and his mother begs Daphne for help since she has experience at this type of thing. Of course her own family would prefer that she stayed out of it. More than this initial mystery is solved in this story.

A large part of the story is built around Daphne’s business of making and decorating both cake and candy. At first the step by step process for making a gum-paste character seemed a little much, but I began to appreciate some of the ideas and instructions provided in the story as other things were made.

The mystery itself was well done. Information is gathered in a fairly relaxed manner as Daphne goes about doing other things while taking time to ask questions. We’re given a number of possibilities but the protagonist isn’t easy to guess before the author decides it’s time.

I found it a light, enjoyable read.

So maybe we could start on the first book after Christmas? GeneF, you'll have to remind me which book comes first chronologically :)

It's always good to hear a pleasant story about customer service. We so often focus on the nightmares and not the good ones :)

Swallowing Darkness was added to the LKH Merry Gentry thread.

Also a new thread was created for Karen Chance's Dorina Basarab series. Midnight's Daughter was added to it and the short story, Buying Trouble from the On The Prowl anthology was moved here from the Cassandra Palmer series. Both series are set in the same world with many of the same characters. The next book in the series, Death's Mistress, will hit the shelves on Jan 5.

Re: Marjorie Liu
« Result #33 on Dec 15, 2009, 9:47am »

TIGER EYE, Marjorie Liu's first book in her Dirk & Steele series, is being turned into a video game! The official announcement is below. What I find the most interesting is that this company is focusing on women with romance-themed video games. Hmm, maybe I should check this out!

New gaming company, PassionFruit Games, launches with first of its kind romance casual game based on bestselling author Marjorie M. Liu’s Tiger Eye novel.

PassionFruit Games today announced the creation of a new romance-themed casual game, Tiger Eye: Curse of the Riddle Box, based on the novel Tiger Eye (A Dorchester Love Spell paperback) by New York Times bestselling author Marjorie M. Liu.

Tiger Eye: Curse of the Riddle Box also officially marks the launch of PassionFruit Games and represents a unique moment in the history of gaming. Although a market for romance themed video games has existed abroad for years, these games are essentially unknown in the U.S. Tiger Eye: Curse of the Riddle Box will be one of the first romance casual games to hit the U.S. market when it goes on-sale in April 2010.

In discussing PassionFruit Games’ decision to launch their company with Tiger Eye: Curse of the Riddle Box, Melissa Heidrich, Studio Director, expressed her enthusiasm for reaching out to romance readers: “The majority of casual gamers are women aged 25-65, who report they play casual games mainly to escape. Interestingly, those same attributes apply to romance novel readers – so it’s surprising that there are currently so few romance casual games on the market. That’s why we’re excited to bring Tiger Eye to life as interactive entertainment.”

For Marjorie M. Liu’s fans, it will be a great chance for them to experience a game written by, designed by, and created for women. Mari Tokuda, one of the designers translating Marjorie’s novel into game form, says: “There just aren’t many romance games in today’s market. And, for many women, romance novels are not interactive enough. That’s where we come in - we are giving players a chance to experience the romance through fun gameplay and sensual cut scenes that further the relationship. This game will really appeal to players who want a storyline and those who want to BE the smart, down-to-earth romance novel heroine. And of course, we’ll have a sexy leading man heavily featured in the game. A game like Tiger Eye is one of the most engaging ways for readers to experience characters’ relationships.”

Fans will also be able to experience things that weren’t in the book and to search for hidden objects, play minigames, listen to a film quality soundtrack, and solve puzzles, all the while following the storyline as the main characters’ relationship deepens emotionally and grows in intimacy, though there will not be explicit sex scenes.

PassionFruit Games acknowledges the challenges of turning a popular book into digital entertainment and of adhering closely to the book’s storyline. In their quest to stay true to the novel, all members of the team—from artist to programmer—read Tiger Eye, as well as other novels in the Dirk & Steele universe, to get a feel for the “essence” of the game. The producer and lead designer held regular video conferences with Marjorie to go over the latest design ideas and Marjorie herself wrote the script for the game and is involved with the game every step of the way, giving input on scene art, character design, and voice actor selection.

Says Marjorie, who is well known for her New York Times bestselling Dirk & Steele and Hunter Kiss series and for co-authoring the hugely popular Dark Wolverine Marvel comic book series, about playing the game’s early build: “I was amazed by the beautiful cinematic cut scenes and the way players could actually experience things my characters had done. It’s an incredible feeling to not only see favorite characters brought to life but to experience life through their eyes as you progress through the game.”

The Tiger Eye novel, which Publishers Weekly praised as a “first-rate debut” and “a striking paranormal romance,” tells the story of Dela, a woman with psychic abilities who buys a riddle box in Beijing’s Dirt Market and opens it to find an ancient warrior, Hari, bound to serve as a slave to the person who has opened the box. The action moves between China and the U.S. and PassionFruit Games will mirror this international scope through two games, the first to take place in China and the second in the U.S. PassionFruit games also plans to involve readers in the release of Tiger Eye: Curse of the Riddle Box with the chance for a select few fans to be Beta testers and with fan voting on looks for the character, Long Nu.

Order Tiger Eye: Curse of the Riddle Box now at holiday e-cards are available at http://www.passionfruitgames.com. The game will be available in both Mac and PC versions.

PassionFruit Games was founded by a group of individuals who had created several critically-acclaimed casual games together before establishing their own independent studio. Their mission is to bring stories and characters to life through lushly-painted interactive environments and captivating cinematics, while providing engaging, entertaining gameplay. The PassionFruit Games team members also worked on the critically acclaimed Nancy Drew Dossier game when they were at Her Interactive; the game was just chosen as the “Best Hidden Object Game of 2009” by Yahoo! Games.

Oh, I like that question.

From what I can tell it changes with culture and time. Today the definition usually says omnipotent and omniscient.

But in Greek and Roman times they were powerful but just as flawed as the rest of us.

I think the best I can come up with that is more or less true for all times is supernatural and having powers in some aspect beyond that of man. Example can control Weather, or can animate trees. It could be a wide ranging power or just supper human control of a small aspect of nature. [image]

It's been said that a number of characters had been gods and goddesses in the past and a few have had a return to godhood. Although, I think it was Doyle, who said they thought they were gods but when they lost everything, realized they were wrong.

So what makes someone a god? Is it what they can do? Or is it being worshiped? A combination of the two?

Is Merry becoming a goddess? What happens to the US rule about not being worshiped if she is?
Hands-on healings are being done in her name by the military folk she healed in SD. Brennan prayed for help and Merry suddenly arrives with the Humvee in the desert. Isn't she starting to be worshiped?
No, You are right, Awillis. The assistant kept up with modern technology - but it's the only place in the sithen, other than the room the reporters were allowed into for a press conference, where the sithen's magic doesn't interfere with electronics.

Most of the sidhe, at least, never even leave their sithen. It seems like some of the guards got out a little more often. I would imagine if they haven't left the sithen in the past 100 years, all of the modern conveniences would scare the crap out of them. And the more time that goes by, the more fearful you would become of the more modern world.

That's one of the things I think is cool about Merry being in Los Angeles. Those with her are being forced to confront and adjust to it all. If they start considering Merry and her group a new type of sidhe, like Seelie and Unseelie, boy, would they have the advantage.

I think there was one in Andais office for her 'assistant' since she was human. Or was it just a telephone? I can't remember.

Wouldn't it be interesting to see the court yank itself into the 21 Century?

I'm reading the entire series again and I've come to the book in which Beatrice dies. And it's brought up that she could never go shopping for books because she couldn't pass as human. Now if she had a computer and a credit card... [image]

Get better soon Jenef. Boy sounds like they could just put in some zippers. Do hope you get better real soon though.

I did get some of them (books). I'm in the middle of a few other books right now. Should be able to start on these soon though.

It's great that you finally got it, and getting one for free is great. I wonder if they'll try to hold UPS accountable. That's the part that really gets to me, especially when paying for overnight delivery.

Wow, that's great! Not that you had such a tough time getting your book, of course, but that you actually got a helpful customer service rep and great service like that!

*sigh* I feel like the only one in the (urban fantasy book) world that hasn't read DM yet. I'll hopefully get it this week some time.

Thanks for the good wishes.

I should be up for a read/discussion of the first book or two after Christmas. Maybe even the third.

I'm currently scheduled to go in for surgery during the second week of January and stay in for nearly a week. I'm not sure how quickly I'll get back to condition to read and post after that, but it should be considerably less than my last time. At least I sure hope so.

Good question. Merry has also died once and came back. Since then she's regularly done the impossible. Why does she still think she's mortal?

Amazon is Great!
« Result #46 on Dec 13, 2009, 10:33am »

Here is a little story that cements what I feel about Amazon and how they treat their customers.

I pre-ordered Divine Misdemeanors and when It came I realized I ordered the wrong thing, I had ordered the CD's instead of the book. I hadn't checked the Amazon order follow up e-mail that came (my bad!) I tried to make arrangements to return then but I was having trouble printing the labels I would need to send them back for credit. I re-ordered the book that night and added cash for over night shipping, we had a snow storm but my shipment was still going to come that day so I waited and waited and waited and finally around 6pm I tracked the order for the 53rd time and found out it had been delivered to my doorstep at 5:09 WRONG!!!!! No foot steps in the snow to prove that it had been delivered to me either! Well to make a long story short, I'll leave out the heated (actually tepid) conversation I had with an Amazon gentleman I had that night. Although he did his very best to help me, but it's UPS's problem at that point.

The next day I called Amazon again, and got this wonderful young lady---I explained the sequence of events and I told her I would be buying it (the book) for my Kindle. She understood and sympathized and went ahead and credited my account for the book, AND the shipping and told me that if it did show up I was to keep it with their compliments. Also when I explained about the CD fiasco she (without me knowing) went ahead and had UPS personally deliver me a sticker for the box!

WOW!

Well guess what? It showed up yesterday in my mailbox! Apparently whoever it was delivered to dropped it off. So I have my Kindle edition and the hardcover!

Merry Christmas!

Karen Chance - Dorina Basarab series
« Result #47 on Dec 13, 2009, 8:30am »

Set in the same world, along with many of the characters from the Cassandra Palmer series, Dorina Basarab (Dory) is a dhampir, half human and half vampire. She’s also Mircea’s daughter. This world consists of the Fey, shifters, vampires, demons, gods, witches, mages and magical items.

As a dhampir, she’s the natural enemy of the vampire as she tends to kill them whenever she can. She’s also prone to falling into berserker mode whenever she gets upset. Fast, strong, accelerated healing, enhanced senses and difficult to kill, Dory is a good friend to have and not someone you want hunting you.

The first book, Midnight’s Daughter, begins when looking for her friend and roommate, Claire, has gone missing. Claire’s story is in Buying Trouble from the On The Prowl anthology.

I'm sorry I know I should have read Cathy's post before adding my 2 cents - but the car bit was very important, it goes back to the last book when the Goddess said that if the Fey were going to ignore her gift then she would bring them to the humans. It's obvious to me that this is what this was since these soldiers had already learned how to heal with Merry's help.

It seems that it's a pivitol book for the next generation of Merry books.

The only way the car idea would not make sense is if the reviewer hadn't read any of the others especially the last two books.
